Fibreglassing the Hull

Now that you have the kayak hull planked, planed, and sanded it’s time to apply the fibreglass. The 3 most important things to keep in mind when working with the epoxy and fibreglass are:

  1. Proper ventilation! Working in a closed up garage is definitely not a good idea. Even with the garage door open you should still have a fair sized fan running to circulate fresh air.
  2. Protective gear. Epoxy is permanent, so your old painting clothes might be a good start. However, going beyond just painting clothes, you need to be wearing gloves and a filter mask is also good idea.
  3. Working time. From the time you mix the epoxy, you are on the clock. Depending on the specific brand and mix of epoxy that you have chose that working time window will vary.
